Architecture Decision Record

An Architecture Decision Record is a concise document that captures a significant architectural decision, the context in which it was made, and the consequences of that choice. It serves as a permanent, version-controlled log that provides historical rationale for technical trade-offs, ensuring team alignment and preventing the loss of institutional knowledge over time.

In complex enterprise environments, the rationale behind technical choices often evaporates as teams rotate or project requirements evolve. Architecture Decision Records mitigate this by decoupling the decision from the implementation, providing a clear audit trail for stakeholders. This practice is particularly critical in AI architecture, where non-deterministic system behaviors and evolving model capabilities require rigorous documentation. By maintaining a structured history of why specific frameworks, data strategies, or agentic patterns were selected, organizations avoid repeating past mistakes and facilitate faster onboarding for new engineers.

To implement this effectively, teams should store records in the same repository as the source code, typically using a lightweight format like Markdown. Each record must follow a consistent template, detailing the status, context, decision, and consequences. Practitioners should prioritize documenting decisions that have long-term impacts on system scalability, security, or interoperability. When a decision is superseded, the record should be updated or linked to a new document rather than deleted, preserving the full lineage of the system's evolution for future reference.
