A search returns a document containing the answer. The agent then quotes an outdated section and creates the wrong follow-up task. A retrieval test may call that a success even though the business outcome failed. **Memory needs more than one checkpoint.**

<TeachingIllustration src="/images/memory/memory-evaluation-v1.webp" title="Three different questions about success" alt="Evaluate whether retrieval found the evidence, whether the answer is supported, and whether the completed task is correct. Test changing facts, absent evidence, restricted sources, and interruptions separately." caption="Teaching illustration. The example is a proposed design, not a measured deployment." />

## Did it find the evidence? [#did-it-find-the-evidence]

Retrieval measures examine the selected records. Any-hit recall asks whether at least one required item was found. Fractional recall asks how much of the required evidence was found. Precision asks how much retrieved material was relevant. State the unit, candidate pool, and retrieval budget with the metric.

Returning every candidate can include every required item without demonstrating useful ranking. Finding one source is also insufficient for a question that requires several.

## Did it answer correctly from that evidence? [#did-it-answer-correctly-from-that-evidence]

Score the generated answer separately. Check supported facts, citations, applicable versions, uncertainty, and refusal when evidence is absent. If an automated judge is used, record its model, prompt, rubric, and agreement with human reviewers on a sample.

Do not compare an any-hit retrieval percentage with an answer-accuracy percentage. The systems did different jobs even if both numbers were called "memory performance".

## Did the task finish correctly? [#did-the-task-finish-correctly]

For an enterprise agent, test the actual outcome. Examples are a justified inspection request, an accurately resumed case, or a supported audit finding. Include duplicate requests, failed tools, missing approvals, and human review. Cost per completed task must include failed attempts and rework.

## Use public benchmarks for the abilities they test [#use-public-benchmarks-for-the-abilities-they-test]

[LoCoMo](https://arxiv.org/abs/2402.17753), 2024, studies long-term conversational memory. [LongMemEval](https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.10813), first published 2024, evaluates abilities including information extraction, reasoning across sessions, temporal reasoning, knowledge updates, and abstention. [BEAM](https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.27246), 2025 with a 2026 revision, extends testing to much longer generated conversations. Reviewed 18 September 2026.

These benchmarks can expose useful weaknesses. They do not establish that a system correctly handles your source permissions, operational tools, or business process. The underlying papers and released evaluation code matter more than a leaderboard headline.

## Read published memory scores with care [#read-published-memory-scores-with-care]

Most published memory scores come from the vendors that sell the memory product. Three findings show how far a headline can sit from a fair test. Sources read 14 October 2026.

**LoCoMo has errors in its answer key.** An audit found about 6.4 percent of LoCoMo's scored answers wrong: 99 of 1,540 questions. Its usual judge model accepted about 63 percent of deliberately wrong answers that stayed close to the topic. So a perfect system would score about 93.6 percent. One vendor already reports 92.5 percent. The audit is a single blog post, not peer reviewed ([Penfield Labs audit, 2026](https://dev.to/penfieldlabs/we-audited-locomo-64-of-the-answer-key-is-wrong-and-the-judge-accepts-up-to-63-of-intentionally-33lg)). Mem0, a memory vendor, repeats its figures ([Mem0](https://mem0.ai/library/agent-memory/how-to-read-memory-benchmarks)) \[vendor].

**LongMemEval scores are vendor-reported.** Published scores cluster at 91 to 96 percent, and every one comes from a vendor. One rerun put several products through the same test setup and the same judge. The published scores differed from the rerun by +3 to -28 points. Google's Vertex AI Memory Bank scored 42.4 percent. The paper behind its design reported about 70 percent ([Redis, 21 September 2026](https://redis.io/resources/agent-memory-benchmark-report/)). Redis ran the rerun and sells a competing product \[vendor].

**A harder test scores memory products low.** On MemoryAgentBench, three commercial memory agents (Mem0, Zep and MIRIX) scored 21.1 to 26.2 overall. Plain long context scored about 49 with GPT-4o or Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Every method scored at most 7 percent on multi-step forgetting. That task asks the agent to drop a fact that a later fact replaced. The answer needs several linked facts ([arXiv 2507.05257, version of 17 March 2026](https://arxiv.org/html/2507.05257v3)). The models tested date from 2025.

Treat a memory leaderboard as a claim until it is rerun with the same answer model, judge and retrieval depth.

## Build a small acceptance suite around the memory story [#build-a-small-acceptance-suite-around-the-memory-story]

Include these cases:

* A paused thread that must resume without repeating work.
* A prior episode that offers useful evidence.
* A current fact corrected by a later source.
* An approved procedure that must not be rewritten from one example.
* A relevant record the caller is not allowed to see.

Add questions the memory cannot answer. Keep test cases separate from development examples. Compare a simple baseline with each proposed addition on the same task set.

## Check the conditions behind a comparison [#check-the-conditions-behind-a-comparison]

Before comparing scores, match the dataset and split, corpus size, reader model, retrieval budget, evidence unit, judge, and metric. Check whether failed questions shaped the final implementation and whether any held-out evaluation remained.

You can stop here with a practical acceptance plan. If you need to choose storage or handle larger histories, continue into the optional advanced pages.
